Blogpost 4: Anime Addiction: Its causes and effects to students

Nowadays, anime addiction is very rampant especially among students. There are many factors that urge students to watch anime that leads to addiction. Anime itself serves as a great factor that let the students to watch, because anime became the latest trend for all teenagers and having a good storyline that makes the students hook up. Another one is due to cool animation, which has a vibrant color that tickles their eyes every time they watched a single episode. Next is peer pressure, which influences a person to watch anime, when your group are expose to anime it will surely influences you. Last is boredom buster. As an expert say,"Boredom is not the lack of sensory stimulation: It is just a lack of imagination or creative thinking, so students tend to watch anime more  often and surf the internet to read online manga.

Students who are too much expose to anime become addicted, however being addicted to it may cause good and bad effects to them and for the people around them. Let's first talk with the good effects anime addiction may cause. I've read some articles about the effects of anime addiction to that otaku and to the people around him/her. Below are some of the articles I read and my opinion about it:

Lawrence Eng, a researcher with a Ph.D. in Science and Technological Studies from Ressealaer Polytechnic Institute, studied the effects of anime fandom on IT students. He found that one great benefit that anime has on students was to increases social interaction. He studied his IT students, and figure that they generally been victims of a stereotype that casts them as antisocial and unapproachable. When the IT students become anime fans, they're immediately accepted by all of the other students who like anime, as well as a community of fans on internet.

Based on these article , students learn to reach to others and make friends to those  who share the same passion with them, like joining cosplay or going to some anime convention. Being with people who have the same likes or hobby you have is much more easier to communicate with.

Some students with a propensity for behavioral problems get ideas from anime. The anime "Death Note", which features a notebook in which the protagonist can write down the name of someone he wants to die as well as the method of that person's death and actually kill the person, hascaused a number of problems in American schools. In Oklahoma in 2009, two students wrote the names of other students they didn't like in a "death note" they made, along with how they'd like those students to die. Similar incidents occured in Virginia, South California, Washington and Alabama in 2007 and 2008.

In these article, it is said that anime addiction can affect their potential behavior problems, which cause them to do or follow what they've watched that they think will actually happen if they do it. I see it like kind of scary, cause I didn't think that this things can affect the mind of a person. Maybe this happening caused them so much addiction to that kind of anime.

Many students interested in anime pursue an interest in art. These students are often interested in designing their own anime characters and creating their own manga (Japanese-style comic books). While some art teachers may be frustrated with these students' desire to draw only in the large-eyed, cartoonish anime style, an increased interest in are is an opportunity to introduce these students to other types of art. Teachers can explain that even anime artists must be able to draw lifelike drawings to be able to convey movement and poses realistically.
In these article, it's all about the effect of anime to students on having an interest in art because of addciction to anime. They enhanced their drawing skills and imagination.

Perhaps the most educational benefit of students' interest in anime is the frequent interestin Japanese language and culture that these students develop as a result. Many Americans who spend time abroad in Japan or who pursue careers in Japan can point to a love of anime as the original impetus.
In these article, it implies on how the student haves interest in Japanese language and culture. Because of so much love to anime, they want to learn Japanese language, and sometimes apply to their daily life a Japanese live.

Too much exposure to anime can cause a postivie and negative effects to its viewer. Let's first talk about the positive effect. The positive effects of anime addiction, is it gives happiness to students which satisfy them and instead of engaging into drugs they spend their time on watching anime. Aside from the entertainment perspective, students learn to reach to others and make friends who share with same passion through joining cosplay or anime conventions. Through watching anime, they enhance their drawing skills by drawing their favorite anime character, and through this their imagination widens. Though most of animes are in Japanese language, we have English sub or dub which allows us to understand what is it all about.

Were finish talking about the positive effects of anime addiction, now let's tackle the negative effects. Students are expose to sexual activity through watching sex type of anime or commonly called Hentai, as you go back to my blog post three you'll see what the hentai means. Watching  that kind of anime can also affect the students behavior.

Students starts to be getting to much influence by every kind of fashion. They lose the sense of reality, since they're expose to the world of anime and sometimes students shows a very childish attitude toward life. To prevent anime addiction, must develop self-discipline or self-control. Students must set limitation and know their top priorities. Proper parental guidance is a must to prevent anime addiction. Parents can help their child through guiding them, academic interests must be taught to students so that they would not focus on watching anime.

  1. Good discussion. Nowadays, anime is designed to be addictive. To overcome the addition, students must understand the underlying principles of making anime additive.

  2. I agree with you. Anime is like animated series, there will be all kinds of genres including hentai. But i don't think people should consider it as part of a bad/negative effect of anime because hentai and porn are both easy accessible and it depends on the moral values of the viewer. You are making it sound like anime in general is hentai. Students will be exposed to sexual activity whether it is anime or real movies or even games.

  7. I think the most negative effect of anime is that because of it's beauty, It may hinder students from studying their lessons ^w^ anyway, it still depends on the watcher :)

  8. **The following is strictly IMO** Discretion advised, some may find it offensive===

I agree completely, the worst effect it has is the appeal of it's polished Artstyle.

It makes even the most disgusting of concepts look acceptable/ or cute, and it does it through hex and charm of the characters (Murder, Homosexuality, pedophilia, schizophrenia, necrophilia, etc.), because people will follow what looks cool without using their own judgement of what they're watching. It's destroying peoples self esteem and inner strength for independence (Hence why so many people rely on anime to get through a day without emotionally losing it), and ultimately degrading the moral compass. Anime female characters are the centerfold of this process, using sex appeal and unrealistic traits that women simply do not possess by law of nature, to weaken men and their masculinity, creating the myth of "otaku's". And it's so pathetic, people who aren't even of japanese culture adopt this term just to feel integrated. The over used theme of "Teenagers in highschool making the world changing decisions and the adults are either the obstacle or the enemy." is one way to get gullible teens/young adults to grow further distant from their parents under the mindset, that they, "Just don't get it."

Anime is the 3rd most powerful psychological tool to get people to lose grasp of responsibility, real life choices and reality, next to the cell phones being the number 1 and social media being 2nd.

    1. I'd personally say that computer games that don't have any "real life" interaction (compared to anime conventions) , and recreation drug use are more powerful negative psychological tools and more "addictive". I have yet to have an anime addict admitted to my care on the psychological floor in the hospital but plenty of people who have reality issues related to the two things I listed. Ironically, one of the nurses I work with actually is big into anime as a stress reliever from work. My experience is that it is more social and offers a positive way for a part of the population who traditionally felt left out to socialize and interact with other people.

  9. As a mother of a teen daughter who loves anime, I have watched her improve her sewing skills as she made her various cosplays. She has learned budgeting as she saves up to go to a big convention so that she has her entrance fee as well as spending money. She even works extra shifts at work to make sure she has money she needs...along with working with her manager to have a particular weekends off by being available on other weekends. She is more comfortable speaking in public and is working on putting together a panel for a local small convention. Her social circle has grown and she often anime is the common ground between new people that she might not have anything else in common with. She draws more. She writes more creative stories. She socializes more as her friend do sewing circles and plan group cosplays. And she is now studying the Japanese language as her foreign language requirement and hopes to go to Japan and be an English teacher for a period of time. And she drags her older brother along (and off his internet games) to become social with her and her friends. We are even closer as she shares her creations or begs me to help her go thrift store shopping to solve cosplay needs. I wasn't thrilled initially with my daughter being so hung up on "cartoons" but honestly, I am having a hard time seeing the down side now.

  10. My daughter lives and breathes anime. She is 16. She is on her iphone reading anime or at the library from 9am to 5pm reading anime. I'm concerned at her lack of interest in anything else but at the same time glad that she isnt interested in boys, alcohol, cigarettes or drugs...... can anyone advise me on this?

  11. I totally get you're daughter's side of things. It's pretty difficult to get over, seeing as I'm struggling to break free myself. The truth is, it isn't healthy to be doing that so much. It changes your personality, and makes you forget that life is real and anime is just made up. I know it sounds ridiculous. But simply put, you just start making everything your own world, and start to forget who the real you is. It's almost a type of escape, just like boys and drugs are, from reality. There are some things that I want to just forget about or 'escape'. But it isn't healthy to always run away from your issues and the problems in your life that you struggle with. sometimes, you don't even know that you struggle with them. All you know is that anime makes you feel happier, and less worried for some reason. This is what I know from personal experience, and I know that this is what it's like to have anime addiction. But it isn't healthy to run away from your issues, or to consume so much time with something as unproductive as building an wall of anime to separate you from the world. Trust me, I have lost so much sleep on school nights, and I'm struggling to get back on the right path. I alone know that this is a problem, and I have nobody to help me, but one close friend. Though anime makes me happy to some degree, it also scares me how much it gets to my head, and how much I have to struggle to still be myself.

  14. I'm 13, a total anime otaku, and anime is totally consuming my life. My mum yells at me for spending hours (usually I wake up around 9-10 am and sleep at 5:00 am on week-ends)and all-nighters reading manga's and anime's. I don't take interest in anything else, except my guitar. I'm putting anime/manga as my first priority and I'm neglecting my friends. My grades are actually really good, but I don't socialize anymore, nor do I get in involved in any physical sports and activities. This a really unhealthy lifestyle.

  15. I guess anime gives fun to students who are introverted in their school/college life ! They try to learn from anime, for example how to communicate with a certain person you like or try to get inspiration form anime to work hard like characters do in anime ! It's matter of view point! I still think anime have more advantage then disadvantage but i also think they students should not shut them in a room and cut of their social like.if you love anime you should learn to balance reality and imagination !

  17. My daughter is 12 and into anime and since she has been watching it her behaviour has changed for the worse. We have told her not to watch it and we check her history on her computer. She is always stating she wants to die and life is not worth living. Recently all we hear is life is boring without it and she will not abide by our rules until she gets what she wants. Think she will be waiting a long time
